Last month, I was honored to be able to join Ninetology in their U9 series launch. This month, I had the chance to review Ninetology U9Z1 alongside with HTC Butterfly S. Click on the link for full spec of Ninetology U9Z1.

It was my first time doing a gadget review and I don’t want to do it in a technical way because it’s not really my style. Besides, it’s quite an unfair to compare an RM 2k+ phone with an RM 1k+ phone so I decided to do it light-heartedly and according to my needs instead of comparing everything.

So what are the criteria that I look for when purchasing a new phone (in no particular order)?

  1. Accessories
Accessories are one of the most important things I look for when buying a phone. I certainly don’t wish to look and pay extra money for accessories. Of course, the most headache part would be to find accessories. Ninetology was very sensitive in this area and included 2 case covers alongside with screen protector, USB charger and headset for U9Z1.

As for HTC Butterfly S, USB charger, headset and headset covers were provided in the box.

  2. Quality of front camera
As a female blogger, I always need to camwhore; sometimes for product review (the before and after application look), sometimes need to pose with products and sometimes just for fun with other bloggers. Having a phone that doesn’t have a front camera currently is a huge setback for me.

Ninetology U9Z1 has a 5MP front camera while HTC Butterfly S has a 2.1MP front camera. The color from HTC Butterfly S is more vibrant but it looks pixelated especially at the neck area. Skin looks smoother in the photo taken with Ninetology U9Z1.

Since both has their pros and cons, it’s a TIE!

  3. Quality of back camera
If can, I hope I don’t need to carry my bulky DSLR around cos it’s very heavy and inconvenient. But as a perfectionist, I hope that I can capture clear photos especially for sponsored posts since I’m paid to do my job well! So I captured the same object (my lunch) with both cameras and compared the results.

Ninetology U9Z1 boasts a 13MP back camera and thus produced sharper photo but unfortunately the photo turned out darker than the photo captured using HTC Butterfly S. HTC Butterfly S has an UltraPixel camera that focuses more on the technology of CMOS sensor, ISP and optical lens system. Nevertheless, I’m impressed that Ninetology’s camera has a lot of special features in their camera like face beautifying and capturing 3D photo.

  4. Battery Life
    Ninetology U9Z1: 2600mAh
    HTC Butterfly S: 3200mAh

After playing Candy Crush Saga for 15 minutes on both phones respectively, HTC Butterfly S showed less battery draining compared to Ninetology U9Z1 although the difference isn’t that big. HTC Butterfly S dropped 1% of battery while Ninetology U9Z1 dropped 2% of battery most probably due to the bigger screen and thus more battery consumption.

    Winner: HTC Butterfly S

  5. Screen size
Ninetology U9Z1 has a 5.7 inch IPS HD display as opposed to HTC Butterflly S’ 5 inch display. Personally, I like bigger screen cos I can see more stuff. It’s perfect when I watch YouTube video since my eye sight isn’t that good old already!).

    Winner: Ninetology U9Z1

  6. Sound quality
Although I seldom play songs on my phone, but it’s still important to me. I might copy my favorite songs to listen when I’m commuting in a flight cos that’s the only time where I can’t listen to the radio.

HTC Butterfly S has produced amazing sound with BoomSound technology. Ninetology U9Z1 wasn’t bad either but lacks of detail when compared to HTC Butterfly S. Here are the videos I took with iPad Mini while playing music:

    Winner: HTC Butterfly S

  7. Value for money
If you haven’t knew, I’m quite a stingy person LOL! Well, Ninetology U9Z1 is priced at RM 1199 while HTC Butterfly S is priced at RM 2320.
Very obvious who the winner is, right? =)

    Winner: Ninetology U9Z1

In the end, it’s a tie of 4-4 between Ninetology U9Z1 and HTC Butterfly S! Phew~~ What a suspense!
