The Meaning of Chinese New Year to Me

IMAG0186 | The Meaning of Chinese New Year to Me
As I became older and older, Chinese New Year has became more meaningless to me. In fact, it made me realize that people are realistic, stingy and selfish the most during this festive season. Why did I say so?
  1. When my dad was in the climax of his career, many people sent him hampers and CNY cards. As year passed, it got lesser and lesser and finally decrease to nil.
  2. Last time, the only way to avoid giving out angpau to your neighbour’s kids is to hide yourself in the house. If you’re caught outside by the kids, consider yourself unlucky. But now, even if I saw my neighbour and wished them Gong Xi Fa Cai, they still pretend nothing happened. I should have wished them Gong Xi Fai Cai instead.
  3. During reunion dinner, everyone talked in Hokkien, not bothering that I couldn’t understand.
  4. As usual, aunt didn’t eat reunion dinner with my grandma (mum’s side) and mum didn’t eat reunion dinner with my grandma (dad’ side) due to unknown family problems. CNY will only make me realize how disunited my family is.
So… these are the reasons why I don’t really look forward to CNY. I like Christmas more because we shower our loved ones with gifts instead of money and the process of picking the right gift for them is more meaningful. It’s the thought that counts. Anyway, here are some photos I took during CNY Eve.
It was raining so heavily my grandma's place flooded! Luckily I didn't buy new shoe cos my whole shoe was soaked!

Don't be sad Charmaine! I also realised even own family tends to be selfish and realistic sometimes.

I feel you. In a way, I feel Chinese New Year forces relatives who haven't met at all in a year to get together. And to put it in an ugly manner, it is all for the ang paos for the kids.

  6. ken says:

it's sort of meaningless to me too – just CNY, again.. ๐Ÿ™‚

So unfortunate of you to think so.
I for one, enjoy Chinese New Year, not because of angpow (which I rarely receive) or just the holidays I receive, but also the time to reunite my family together for dinner/lunch.

By the way, I'm not close to my family, so that's the only time I get to see them all together. LOL.

Happened to find your site/blog through a friend of yours (sixthseal.com).

Although I like New Year's Eve, I can relate to your feelings towards meaninglessness (new word?) and gestures seeming empty.

Well, here's me, a total stranger, wishing you all the best for the year of the dragon. Hope it helps ๐Ÿ™‚

    Regards from The Netherlands,
    Maurice

    1. Charmaine says:

      Thank you!

  15. Danny Foo says:

    Poor dog. ๐Ÿ˜

Anyway, I know what you mean. I was sitting at a table recently where the grandfather kind of refused to join in the lo sang just because everyone was going to start tossing without him. Sigh.

But I guess, sometimes it's hard to control some things with age.

    1. Charmaine says:

      Aww that's sad ๐Ÿ™
Anyway, Happy Chinese New Year to you!

  16. Maurice says:

Bet you didn't expect wishes to come from this far. Hihi ๐Ÿ™‚

By the way, somehow I couldn't reply to your reply, hence…a new comment.

    1. Charmaine says:

      Yeah I was really surprised.
Hmm not sure why the reply comment doesn't function in Chrome. It only works in Firefox ๐Ÿ™

  17. Maurice says:

Mmmm, that's too bad. Maybe that's also the reason why your pages are running slow on my pc. Although…., the data DO have to travel a long distance. Hahahaha.

I don't receive notifications of a reply either, because I can't leave a mail-address. So I have to physically check the pages that I left a comment on.

Ah well, if that's all the trouble predicted for a dragon in 2012….I'll get by. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Charmaine says:

Aww that's too bad ๐Ÿ™ In that case, we can keep in touch via Facebook.
My FB page is on the right sidebar ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. Smitten Byfood says:

Hello pretty lady… GONG XI FA CAI to you. Don't feel so sad, whatever happens, it will only make you stronger. Stay true to yourself and avoid repeating others ppl mistakes. Life is short, we should all cherish it. =) SMILE YEA!

    1. Charmaine says:

      Hey Ms. Smith,
What you said is so true ๐Ÿ™‚
Thanks for reminding me, I will learn from their mistakes ๐Ÿ˜€
