It’s been a while since I’ve eaten in a hotel. More so, I’ve not eaten proper Chinese food outside for a long time besides grandma’s cooking. Imagine my joy when I was invited for a food review at Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant at One World Hotel! They recently revamped their menu to keep the excitement going and thus, almost 30% of the food in their menu are either new ones or with enhanced recipe! If you haven’t know, they mainly focuses on Teochew and Cantonese dishes.
Striking menu of Zuan Yuan |
香口干贝酥 Deep Fried Dried Scallop with Crispy Leaf Vegetable and Seaweed Price: RM 24 |
金田软壳蟹 Crispy Soft Shell Crab in Vinegar Honey Sauce Price: RM 20 |
烟鸭伴海蜇 Smoked Duck with Jelly Fish Price: RM 28 |
Our feast began with three appetisers, the first one was Deep Fried Dried Scallop with Crispy Leaf Vegetable and Seaweed, a dish that gives a crunchy feel every bite you took. The second appetiser was Crispy Soft Shell Crab in Vinegar Honey Sauce. The blend of vinegar honey sauce is just right to create a balanced taste for the soft shell crabs, not too overwhelming. The highlight was Smoked Duck with Jelly Fish, a very sinful appetiser that has received a lot of positive feedbacks. Indulging in the aromatic smoked duck with the right proportion of meat and fat combined with special sauce is truly satisfying.

金银瑶柱太子羹 Braised Australian Scallop Soup with Dried Scallop and Snow Fungus in Egg White Price: Regular – RM 28/Medium – RM 40/Large – RM 60 |
As many diners nowadays are trying to avoid having shark’s fin, Zuan Yuan cleverly introduces Braised Australian Scallop Soup with Dried Scallop and Snow Fungus in Egg White as an alternative. The taste of it is surprisingly no less than shark’s fin!
金蒜富豪炒饭 Fried Rice with Seafood, Garlic and Golden Dried Scallop Price: RM 30 |
蒜茸虾干粉丝蒸胜瓜 Steamed Petola Melon with Dried Shrimp, Golden Garlic and Glass Noodle Price: RM 25 |
沙茶冬粉虾煲 Stewed Tiger Prawn with Vermicelli and “Sha Cha” Sauce in Claypot Price: RM 46 |
羊肚菌烩雪鱼 Pan Fried Cod Fish with Braised Morel Mushroom and Black Fungus in Oyster Sauce with a touch of Truffle Oil Price: RM 33 |
榄菜蒸滑鸡 Steamed Marinated Chicken Fillet with Preserved Olive Leaf Price: RM 30 |
One of the Teochew dishes that were served is Steamed Marinated Chicken Fillet with Preserved Olive Leaf, a tender chicken dish that is full of aroma once you took a bite of it. They cleverly used preserved olive to enhance the flavor of a simple dish.
香蕉豆沙炸窝饼 Crispy Red Bean Chinese Pancake with Banana Price: RM 13 |
桂花蜂糖炖香梨 Double Boiled Pear with Osmanthus and Honey Price: RM 10 |
As for dessert, we had Crispy Red Bean Chinese Pancake with Banana and Double Boiled Pear with Osmanthus and Honey. Crispy Red Bean Chinese Pancake with Banana might looked like a typical dessert in a Chinese restaurant but surprisingly it’s not! Combining red bean and banana as the filling of this pancake makes it tastes a lot better than the typical ones. What I like most though, is the Double Boiled Pear with Osmanthus and Honey, it’s served chilled and every bite tasted so refreshing and cooling! The Osmanthus was stuffed inside the pear so you’ll have to dig it out to discover the gem inside. I finished everything on the plate!
Chef Woon Ting Keat with the array of dishes served |
Overall, Zuan Yuan was really impressive with their new dishes and I’m definitely coming back for more food the next time I’m craving for nice Chinese cuisine!

The Braised Australian Scallop Soup with Dried Scallop and Snow Fungus in Egg White was a refreshing take by Zuan Yuan. Brilliant too especially for folks like me who do not take sharks fins for ethical reasons.
