Standing at 120 meters and approximately 800 meters above sea level, Sipiso-piso Waterfall (Air Terjun Sipiso-piso) is known as the highest waterfall in Indonesia. This legendary waterfall is located at Tongging Village, Kabanjahe, Karo regency in North Sumatra.
Sipiso-piso Waterfall (Air Terjun Sipiso-piso)
Distance to Sipiso-piso Waterfall (Air Terjun Sipiso-piso) from Berastagi is approximately 40 km. It took our private driver an hour to reach there. If you’re planning to visit Samosir Island (Pulau Samosir), you can slot this place in while on your way to Tiga Raja Harbour. Berastagi -> Sipiso-piso Waterfall -> Tiga Raja Harbour -> Samosir Island It is also reachable by public transport. You would need to take a local bus from Berastagi to Kabanjahe (RP 2,000) and then at Kabanjahe bus terminal, take a bus that will be heading to Siantar. Remember to inform the bus driver your destination. There will be an entrance fee of RP 4,000 per person and parking fee of RP 3,000 per car. Sipiso-piso Waterfall is formed from a small underground river in Karo plateau that rushes out through a cave. The name Sipiso-piso in Bahasa Indonesia has a meaning of “like knife”. It came about because the water flow was sharp like a knife piercing through. There’s a staircase that leads to the base of the waterfall. It wasn’t so steep but then the condition was rough and the size of the steps were too big. Had to waste more energy and time going down because I had to take 3 steps to go down 1 step. Maybe it doesn’t sound logic but it definitely feels that way LOL! Be mesmerized by the magnificent view of Lake Toba while on the way down. We didn’t go down to the base because it would take minimum 1 hour to go down and 1 hour to hike up. Since I wasn’t physically fit, it’s better not to attempt it. A little further after this stall, there’s a small resting area for you to sit and enjoy the amazing waterfall. The beauty of nature and the “grand-ness” of this place makes us feel so small. It took us only 7 minutes to walk down until our desired stop which I think is probably only 1/3 of the waterfall height. But the view there was already awesome enough to satisfy us. While you’re there, don’t forget to take selfies with the waterfall! 😆 Because selfie is just too mainstream… Oh wait, I am drinking from the “main stream”! The walk back up took me 12 minutes (almost double the time I took to walk down!) and it was very very challenging! Glad I didn’t walk all the way down. My heart palpitated so fast and I got dizzy. Had to stop for a rest and take multiple deep breathes to recover. Anyways, no regrets! I’m so glad we made it to this attraction. After all, Sipiso-piso Waterfall is the highest waterfall in Indonesia! Map:
