The Taichung murcott, a long-cherished favorite in Taiwan, is making its way to Malaysia just in time for Ramadan, bringing its citrusy delight to the festive season. For the first time, the Agricultural Bureau of Taichung City Government joins hands with the Faculty of Food Science and Technology at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to craft special iftar pastries infused with the exquisite flavor of Taichung murcott, aiming to share the delectable taste of Taiwan with Malaysians.
Taichung Murcott
In a significant move to introduce Taichung murcott in Malaysia, the Shigang District Farmers’ Association of Taichung City organized a press conference. The event was graced by Ms. Eva Peng, Director of the Taiwan Trade Centre KL Office in Kuala Lumpur, who participated in the ceremonial “citrus picking,” symbolizing the fresh arrival of Taichung fruits in Malaysia. Ms. Tsai Hsin Tien, National Vice President of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Malaysia, also showed her support for the high-quality Taiwanese fruits.
Mr. Fu Yu Chin, Director of Marketing Department of the Shigang District Farmers’ Association of Taichung City, highlighted that murcott is a popular gift throughout the year in Taiwan, especially during the Lunar New Year. The ideal growing conditions in Shigang yield murcott fruits renowned for their vibrant golden sheen, thin peel, juicy flesh, and high nutritional content. Ensuring their premium quality, these fruits are packed in facilities certified by GLOBAL GAP and ISO 22000.
The eagerly awaited first batch of Taichung murcott arrived in Malaysia on the 3rd of March, with plans to export to Singapore, Canada, and other selected countries. This year, Taichung anticipates exporting approximately 150 metric tons of murcott, marking a significant milestone in international distribution.
Embracing the principles of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) framework, the Agricultural Bureau of Taichung City Government and UPM are collaborating to transform Taichung murcott into exquisite Malaysian pastries. Under the guidance of famed Malaysian celebrity chef, Chef Johari Edrus (Chef Jo), students will craft these delightful treats, blending traditional flavors with Taiwanese citrus nuances.
Chef Jo expressed his fascination with the sweet and juicy Taichung murcott, a sentiment that sparked his desire to share these flavors with more Muslim friends during his teaching stint at UPM. His enthusiasm is set to culminate in the creation of unique pastries that celebrate the fusion of Malaysian culinary artistry and Taiwanese fruit excellence.
